POSITION SUMMARY:

As a Friends of South Asia Intern, you will play a crucial role in supporting the curator and collection specialist with the expansive Global South Asia collection. This dynamic position entails actively participating in the processing of acquisitions across three major categories: photographic materials, archives and films from a renowned contemporary artist, and an intricate philately collection. Your responsibilities will also extend to managing smaller, collection-based initiatives as they arise, ensuring a rich and varied experience. We value flexibility and work-life balance, offering the opportunity for at least one remote workday each week, allowing you to blend the convenience of home with the enriching experience of on-site engagement. Join us in this unique role that bridges the worlds of art, culture, and history, contributing significantly to our understanding and preservation of South Asian heritage.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the curator and collection specialist with the inventory, organization, and proper housing of the Global South Asia collection, including new acquisitions.
  • Support in creating high-resolution scans of film negatives for the Mahzer Master Collection.
  • Help with inventory and organization of the Panchal Mansaram collection, focusing on archival documents and films in 8mm and 16mm formats.
  • Aid the curator and selection committee in tracking and organizing applications for the IARTS Textiles of India Grant, as well as managing relevant email communications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor's graduate or a Master’s student specializing in museum studies, photographic studies, collection management, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience or familiarity with using a digital camera.
  • Previous experience in a museum or archive setting is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of South Asian history and the ability to read Urdu are considered valuable assets.
  • Experience with museum database systems, particularly The Museum System (TMS), is beneficial.
  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with the capability to work both independently and as part of a team.

SALARY & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

START DATE: June 2024

OPEN DATE: April 3, 2024

CLOSE DATE: April 16, 2024

STATUS: Full-time/Part-time Contract

EMPLOYEE GROUP: EXEMPT

HOURLY RATE: $18 (undergraduate) / $20 (master’s)

SCHEDULE: up to 35 hours weekly

LOCATION (onsite): Toronto, ON
