Job Description
GEI is seeking applicants for a Climate Change Intern with a background in climate change impacts and adaptation studies, environmental science, or related disciplines. The intern will support GEI’s climate services projects, focusing on adaptation and resilience. This role offers an opportunity to work closely with subject matter experts, develop practical tools, and contribute to impactful projects that address the complexities of climate risks and opportunities across North America. The primary location for this role is Barrie, but we are open to candidates working from other office locations, including Markham, Hamilton, and Guelph.
A key part of this role is related to identifying and communicating climate risks, obtaining climate data, modeling future climate projections, and recommending suitable adaptation and resilience measures.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Research and Analysis
- Assist in developing research tools and deliverables such as climate risk assessment frameworks, decision support systems, and climate data products.
- Interpret climate model outputs to create site- or region-specific climate change scenarios.
- Project Support
- Support technical components of climate risk and resilience projects, including issue identification, problem resolution, and project implementation.
- Collaborate on the development of adaptation strategies tailored to clients' needs across diverse sectors.
- Communication and Knowledge Sharing
- Contribute to project dissemination efforts through case studies, mapping products, white papers, and presentations.
- Assist in the co-development of user-friendly climate adaptation tools to facilitate decision-making for clients.
- Strategic Development
- Maintain knowledge of available climate change funding opportunities and support grant applications as needed.
- Participate in proposal writing and preparation, assisting in the development of compelling project narratives.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Progressing towards a degree (or specialization) in climate change, climatology, earth sciences or related discipline.
- Understanding of scientific and practical issues in climate change adaptation and its relevance to one or more of the following areas of study or related field: natural systems, water resources, infrastructure systems.
- Working knowledge of at least one coding language (VBA, python, etc.).
- Strong analytical and research skills, with experience in interpreting and applying climate model data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey climate risks and opportunities to diverse audiences.
- Working knowledge of the latest climate science (e.g., climate modeling), its limitations and strengths, and various applications of climate information for decision makers.
- Ability to work flexibly, take initiative, and respond to changing priorities.
- Valid driver’s license required.
